HOW I PHOTOGRAPH MY OWN KIDS - Tips from Seattle Area Family Photographer

I have very spirited kids (that’s code for “strong-willed”) and even though I’m a family photographer, it doesn’t mean I always get the shots of them that I really want. If you’re parenting kids like mine, then this probably sounds familiar. You try your best to capture sweet moments on your smartphone or digital camera, but the results leave you disappointed.

Rest assured there are plenty of moments when my kids won’t accommodate what I’m asking them to do. While I photograph them almost daily, I usually don’t ask them to stop what they’re doing and pose before I click the shutter. Capturing them naturally in a moment, unaware of their mom sneaking around like a ninja with a camera, is how I like to photograph my family and it helps to keeps the peace.

For inspiration on how you can make better images of your kids, here are a few from my personal collection to help you along.

“Sure guys, you can play in the drapes while I take a quick picture and hope with fingers crossed that you’re not going to start fighting (as per usual) and accidentally pull on the drapes so hard that the curtain rod comes off the wall.”

The nap time wake-up can go one of two ways. A delightful babe opens her eyes after snoozing for an hour and she’s in a state of bliss…or she can totally freak out that she’s alone in her room and thinks I’m never coming back which results in glass-shattering shrieks until I race to her room and swing open the door. It’s always a fun surprise!

Here, I just loved the way she looked while yawning, and those rosy cheeks.

On this day at Bloedel Reserve on Bainbridge Island, my daughter was not feeling cooperative and definitely didn’t want her picture taken. I made peace with what I captured as she passed through a magical pocket of light in the woods. So much of photography is just waiting for the moment.

Truth be told, little kids can be way easier to photograph. They’re not typically self-conscious like older kids or adults can be. BUT it’s important to remember that a toddler is a ticking time bomb and can have a spontaneous meltdown without warning. Just a tip.

I believe deeply that all families should have photos taken at least once before kids leave the nest.
