When I’m shooting an outdoor session I’m reminded of how quickly conditions can change. Mother Nature is in charge and, while I may have had an image in my mind of what the session would look like, it can quickly become something different.

A golden setting sun was making its magic as I waited for this family of five to meet me, when suddenly a mammoth cloud swooped in and ate up most of the light. Ok, so the crisp golden light was gone, but this session ended up being beautiful in a softer, dreamier way.

I like to remind families to bring a favorite blanket to outdoor sessions to let the kids stretch out on the ground, especially if it’s a damp outside. Or if the wind picks up, a blanket is great for cuddling. And while sometimes parents aren’t planning to be photographed, requesting a kids-only shoot, I’m always happy when I can persuade them to join in for a few shots. This session was no exception! The last few clicks of the evening were among my favorites.
