How to photograph teens at your Seattle Family Photo Shoot

When it comes to photographing teens you’re likely to be met with a scowl, smirk or aggravated grunt. How do I know? I have one of my own. Even a photographer can have a hard time capturing authentically sweet moments of her own kids. But there are tricks to making a family photography session a success, even if it seems impossible.

What a teenager really wants is autonomy. Treat him or her like the young adult they are, as opposed to that tiny baby they once were ( I know, Moms…this is no easy task!) and watch the tension ease and their faces relax.

Before I begin a session with older kids I explain what we’ll be doing and how much time it will take - because I know they’re already checking their phone to see who just texted.

I keep my prompts simple (prompts are how I’ll ask you to move and pose to create beautifully emotive images) and try to bring out your teen’s personality by asking about their interests and conveying that their time is valuable to me.

Lastly, I truly believe that to create images that capture authentic emotion within a family there must be a genuine connection with their photographer. A 10-15 minute phone call before booking your session is all it takes. Get in touch today to schedule a call!
